KUCHING:  A proposal for the application of ‘Kuching as a Creative City of Gastronomy’ under UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) was submitted to Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Sarawak Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah today (Apr 21).

The proposal was handed by Mayor of Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Datuk Wee Hong Seng together with representatives of Culinary Heritage and Arts Society Sarawak (CHASS) and Society Atelier Sarawak (SAS) at the ministry’s office in Petra Jaya.

MBKS, in a statement, disclosed that the UCCN application would be the first for Malaysia under any of the creative fields.

“The council together with CHASS and SAS started this project since November last year. We believe that by collaborating with the ministry, we can work hand in hand to promote Kuching City to the world as a gastronomic destination.

“At the same time, this will grow the creative economy to benefit our fellow Sarawakians,” added the council.

The UCCN was created in 2004 to promote cooperation with and among cities that have identified creativity as a strategic factor for sustainable urban development.

The 246 cities, which currently make up the network, work together towards a common objective, that is, placing creativity and cultural industries at the heart of their development plans at the local level and cooperating actively at the international level.
