KUCHING: The Sarawak Oil and Gas Workers Association (Sogwa) requested that more training opportunities be made available by the state government to those who are interested in working in the oil and gas industry.

Its secretary Ringgit Seniman said providing highly skilled manpower is crucial for the state, especially in its effort to develop the industry in the state.

“For example, the governments of Terengganu and Johor support their people’s training in the areas of electrical engineering, welding, and other related skills.

“As we have skilled and quality manpower, more companies will be interested in investing in Sarawak if it is implemented here,” he pointed out.

He said this when asked to comment on the benefits obtained by the community through the Sarawak government’s efforts to strengthen the oil and gas industry in the state.

In the same development, Ringgit stated that Sogwa has consistently supported the state government’s initiatives to realise the Sarawak Gas Roadmap, which aims to transform Sarawak into a high-income region by 2030.

“We also hope that Sarawakians are not given only low positions. However, it is appropriate that they be offered courses, training, and other opportunities if they are given the chance to hold high or important positions,” he said.

Meanwhile, Ringgit said that accidents involving lives do occur for individuals working in the field.

He said this is due to the fact that gas pipelines can cause fatal accidents if oil and gas workers do not do their jobs carefully and correctly.

“Because of that, all employees must always adhere to safety regulations, and continuous work quality and pipe maintenance inspections should also be performed,” he said.
