MIRI: In a significant crackdown on illegal cryptocurrency mining operations involving power theft, Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB), in collaboration with local authorities, successfully uncovered and dismantled an illicit cryptocurrency mining setup in Pujut here.

The operation had been causing frequent electricity disruptions in the surrounding area and has led to substantial financial losses for the energy provider.

“The breakthrough came during a recent raid led by SEBs operations and retail subsidiary, Syarikat Sesco Berhad.

“During the operation, the team discovered a staggering 40 cryptocurrency mining servers concealed on the upper floors of a shophouse in Pujut. These servers had been illegally connected using direct tapping cables, indicating an elaborate setup designed to siphon electricity without detection,” SEB said in a press release

It added that all equipment associated with the cryptocurrency mining operation was dismantled and seized as evidence of power theft.

“This discovery followed a comprehensive investigation into numerous reports of power outages in the region, as well as an abnormal surge in electricity consumption that exceeded three times the standard usage.”

The electricity theft incident had incurred substantial costs for Sarawak Energy, estimated at a monthly loss of RM28,000 due to unrecorded consumption.

“The property agent overseeing the premises was also present as a witness during the raid. All parties involved, including the property agent, will be subjected to thorough investigations, with potential penalties under Section 33(5) of the Electricity Ordinance.

“These penalties can include fines of up to RM100,000 and/or imprisonment for up to five years if found guilty.”

SEB strongly advises the public against engaging in electricity theft due to the associated risks, including short circuits, fires, damage to appliances, and even potential loss of life.

Individuals are also urged to exercise caution when encountering service providers who promise reduced electricity consumption or offer unlimited power supply through meter tampering.

SEB calls on the public to report any information related to electricity theft and suspicious activities by contacting its Customer Care Centre at 1300-88-3111 or via email at customercare@sarawakenergy.com
