ASAJAYA: Bad weather hampered the second day of the search and rescue (SAR) operation for a local fisherman who fell from a fishing boat into Sampun waters on Wednesday (Oct 12).

Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Sarawak director First Admiral Zin Azman Md Yunus in a statement, said the weather was reported to be bad yesterday (Oct 13).

“As of 2pm, the wind is reported to be blowing from southwest with speed of 40 to 50km per hour and waves up to 2.5 metres to 3.5 metres.

“The search sector yesterday covered an area of ​​18.87 square nautical miles,” he said.

As at press time, the victim identified as Fadrull Razzie Zaini, 28, has yet to be found.

A total of 55 rescuers from Marine Police Force, Fire and Rescue Department, Civil Defence Force, Sarawak Coast Guard and Malaysia Volunteers Corps Department (RELA) equipped with five boats are involved in the operation.

On the day of the incident, the victim had gone out fishing with five of his friends around 5am.

The victim was said to be holding onto an oar before it suddenly broke and caused him to fall into the waters.

His friends tried to save the victim but to no avail. The authorities were later alerted for assistance to look for the missing victim.
