KUCHING: The Malaysian Scouts Federation Sarawak Branch created a new record when it successfully entered the Malaysia Book of Records for the ‘Longest Bamboo Table’ in the country.
The bamboo table measuring 81.2 metres long was successfully constructed in about 50 hours at Kuching Waterfront by some 40 scouts from within and outside the country.
Made from 500 bamboo sticks taken from Kampung Sidunuk, Padawan, the new record broke the old record held by a club in Pahang which had created the bamboo table of 60.9 metres long.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg received the record from The Malaysia Book of Records chief operating officer Christopher Wong today.
“Thank you to the scouts from Sarawak, Semenanjung Malaysia, Sabah, and Kalimantan who have made this bamboo table and enabled it to enter a new record.
“I must congratulate you, it is not easy to make a table out of bamboo, let alone making it the longest in the country,” he said.
Meanwhile, Malaysian Scouts Federation Sarawak Branch deputy commissioner Macdonald Segie said about RM3,000 was spent to purchase the bamboo from the villagers in Kampung Sidunuk, Padawan.
“We started constructing the table on June 30 until July 1, 10pm. It was successfully built in two days, two nights as a result of the close cooperation from all scouts involved, including us who cut the bamboo ourselves from the village in Padawan and brought it here to Kuching Waterfront,” he said.
The 1.6-metre wide table was constructed using various tying techniques.
