LOS ANGELES: Warner Bros. Pictures’ fantasy comedy ‘Barbie’ won its third consecutive weekend in North American theatres with an estimated three-day cume of US$53 million, showed figures from the measurement firm Comscore on Sunday.

The live-action film, directed by American female filmmaker Greta Gerwig, has grossed US$459.4 million in the United States and Canada for a global total of US$1.031 billion through Sunday. It is the first film directed solely by a woman to cross the billion-dollar mark globally, said Xinhua.

Based on the iconic Barbie fashion dolls, ‘Barbie’  features an all-star cast including Oscar-nominees Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.

“Meg 2: The Trench,” a co-production between the United States and China, came in second with US$30 million on its opening weekend in North America.

The shark thriller, presented by Warner Bros. Pictures and China’s CMC Pictures, is the sequel to 2018’s box office hit ‘The Meg’. Directed by Ben Wheatley, the film stars British actor Jason Statham and Chinese actor Wu Jing, among others.
