Best reciters go home with RM1,000 each

KUCHING: Kamil Mejeni won the Qari category of the Kuching Level Tilawah Al-Quran held at Masjid Al-Abyad here while Nurafiqah Mohamad Musa captured the Qariah category.

Each went home with RM1,000.00, a trophy and a certificate. Meanwhile, Mohd Safwan Mahli, who came second in the Qari category, received RM750, a trophy and a certificate while Muhammad Syahazlan Sahmat, who was placed third, went home with RM500, a trophy and a certificate.

In the Qa r i ah cat e gor y , Zubaidah Abta came second; she went home with RM750, a trophy and a certificate.

Third placed Dygku Farahwaheda Awang Mohammed received RM500, a trophy and a certificate. Gracing the closing and prize giving ceremony was Minister of Works, Dato Sri Fadillah Yusof. In his speech, Fadillah said that the Al-Quran should not just be read and appreciated but should also be researched. “There is a lack of research undertaken on the verses of the Al-Quran by our own people while non-Muslims from around the world have undertaken it,” he said.

He pointed out that the use of technology during the Tilawah Al-Quran event had been very helpful, especially to the audience attending it. “Not only do we listen to the recital of the contestants but we can also understand what is being recited as translations of the verses are shown on the big screen,” said Fadillah.

The chief judge of the competition was Ustaz Haji Abdul Rahim Rasyid who is the Head of Al-Quran Unit of Jabatan Agama Islam Sarawak (JAIS). The competition attracted 56 participants. Also present was the Kuching Resident, Shukarmin Chasemon.
