KUCHING: The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) will be relocating its air unit from Miri to Kuching.

Federal Deputy Minister of Housing and Local Government Datuk Seri Ismail Abd Muttalib said the site for the new base would be near Kuching International Airport.

“There are currently three air bases in the country, namely Miri, Penang and Subang, wheres areas like the East Coast and Sabah do not have any.

The air unit currently operates in Miri, catering to Sarawak, Sabah and Labuan regions.

There will also be an air base set up in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. However, discussions with the Sabah government are still ongoing and the location of the site has yet to be identified.”

Ismail was speaking to the media after a Bomba function here on Tuesday (July 19).

Sharing how national Bomba director-general Datuk Seri Mohammad Hamdan Wahid often highlighted matters that could enhance the department’s capabilities, Ismail said the ministry was eager to assist wherever possible.

This is why we send Bomba personnel overseas to train and to conduct study visits to see the advanced equipment that other countries may have. This allows us to work on providing better and more advanced equipment.

With better and more advanced equipment, we can improve the response time for emergencies.”
