KUCHING: The Borneo Cultures Museum (BCM) is the most visited place in Sarawak, recording about 572,000 visitors so far since its opening on March 9 last year.

Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts (MTCP) Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the feat reflects the regional government’s success in showcasing the cultures of Sarawak.

“BCM has become a must-visit place for locals and foreigners alike,” he said in his welcoming speech during the official opening of the Borneo Culture Museum Restaurant (BCMR) yesterday (Jan 18).

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg officiate at the event.

Abdul Karim said BCM is a unifying landmark and something that Sarawakians can be proud of as the culture of each ethnic group is showcased by the museum.

Touching on the restaurant, Abdul Karim said his ministry is welcomes the idea of setting up a fine-dining restaurant as it helps to boost tourism.

“I believe the restaurant will help the culinary industry and make Kuching a better place,” he said.

Meanwhile, BCMR general director Ngui Ing Ing said she is exploring new opportunities to collaborate with universities or the government to train young people in the food service industry or hospitality sector.

“As a community, we are responsible for grooming our youth as they are our future and leading by doing is the best way to acquire skills.

“Both my restaurants (BCMR and the RoundTower 1881 Cafe and Restaurant) currently provide internship placements for USCI and i-CATS students.

“With proper certification, young people in the industry will earn better pay and have better career prospects. These are important to retain them and grow the industry,” said Ngui.

Among those present were Abang Johari’s wife Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang, Abdul Karim’s wife Datin Seri Zuraini Abdul Jabbar, Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) chairman Dennis Ngau and Sarawak Museum Department director Nancy Jolhi.
