Brazen robbery at convenience store sparks police investigation

PADAWAN: A daring robbery took place at a convenience store here which was captured in a viral video circulating on social media.

Police are investigating the incident which occurred on May 22. The footage, posted by user Dmynewshub, has raised concerns within the community.

Padawan district police chief Superintendent Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said a 20-year-old female employee at the premises filed a report on the harrowing incident.

“The perpetrator, disguised as a woman wearing baju kurung, brandished a knife and approached the cashier, forcing them to hand over the money. The suspect quickly fled the scene, leaving the employees unharmed but shaken.

“Two suspects have been identified in the orchestrated crime. One individual infiltrated the establishment while the other waited outside on a motorcycle as a getaway vehicle.

“Both culprits are believed to be local residents. A special task force, in collaboration with neighbouring police units and the Sarawak State Criminal Investigation Department (JSJ IPK Sarawak), has been formed to apprehend the suspects,” Abang Zainal said ia a statement.

The case is being treated as a gang robbery, falling under the provisions of Section 395/397 of the Penal Code. If convicted, the cuplprits may face up to 20 years in prison, in addition to possible caning.

Zainal at the same time urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information or speculating on the incident.

He said it could disrupt ongoing investigations and cause unnecessary distress.
