LAWAS: The buffalo cheese processing facility at the Meragang Buffalo Breeding Station here is expected to be fully operational by November being ahead of schedule by 17 percent.

Deputy Food Industry, Commodities and Regional Development Minister Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail said that the RM13 million plant will cater to both local and international markets.

He said the plant aims to breed 30,000 buffaloes by 2030, with the current number already exceeding 17,000.

“This RM13 million plant will process buffalo cheese to supply both the local market and for export to international markets. This will increase cheese production in Malaysia to meet domestic demand,” he said.

He said this when speaking to reporters during his working visit to Meragang Buffalo Breeding Station yesterday (Feb 14).

The Bukit Kota assemblyman said Lawas has the potential to be a tourist destination in northern Sarawak and boasts picturesque landscapes reminiscent of New Zealand.

“This area is like the New Zealand of Sarawak, with its beautiful landscape surrounded by highlands and several waterfalls,” he added.
