KUCHING: Today turned out to be a busy and worrying day for the people in Padawan after continuous heavy downpours since Monday night that have caused a lot of villages and roads to be inundated by flood waters.

Rescue agencies such as the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), Civil Defence Force (APM) and the police, have been hard at work to attend to the emergency calls and assist in evacuation operation as well as monitoring the water levels.

Speaking to New Sarawak Tribune, Beckham Follin, 26 from Kampung Punau, Padawan said he was unable to make any prior preparations as the flood was not expected.

“When I woke up, I was surprised to see that water had entered the house and I immediately informed my family members.

“We moved all of our important items in a hurry and rescued our pets as well.

“Most of our daily necessities were washed away by the flood and we could only wait for the flood to recede to start cleaning the house,” said Beckham.

He also expressed hope that the relevant authorities or bodies will be able to extend help to those affected by the flood in the form of food basket, clothes and electrical items.

Meanwhile, Mcalisky Kayan, 25, from Kampung Bawang, Puncak Borneo said the road leading to the village is inundated by flood waters causing it impassable to all types of vehicles.

“We are unable to enter our village as the road leading in and out is cut off. We are stuck here.

“The village head has been notified on the matter and taken some action. We are now waiting to be evacuated,” she said briefly.

Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) issued a warning of continuous rain for several areas in the state starting Monday until today (March 1).

The notice said that among the areas involved include Kuching, Serian, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu, Mukah and Bintulu (Tatau and Bintulu).
