Call for zero burning on World Environment Day 2019

KUCHING: The Department of Environment is calling for zero open burning to mark the annual World Environment Day 2019.

Themed “Air Pollution”, the day was launched by DOE acting director Amirul Aripin at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching yesterday.

Jointly organised with Sarawak Energy Berhad the launching ceremony saw the participation of 40 Peryatim orphans in some drawing and colouring competitions.

According to Amirul, the activity was aimed at encouraging youngsters to pay attention to environmental issues.

“Through this event, we hope make youngsters appreciate the importance of environmental conservation,” he said

Emphasising the importance of zero burning, he said it was primarily to prevent smoke from polluting the air.

“Smoke haze can cause severe damage to our health and we should decompose waste vegetation instead of burn it,” he said
