SERIAN: Jalur Gemilang must be flown to invigorate the spirit of patriotism, especially during National Day and Malaysia Day.

Special Envoy of the Prime Minister to Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, Datuk Seri Richard Riot Jaem said he was also hoping that the ceremony, despite its simplicity, be held every year due to its importance.

“If possible, I would like us to organise a much bigger celebration next year,” he said.

He also added that there was nothing wrong for Sarawak to celebrate National Day as well, despite its rich history, especially in the formation of Malaysia.

“We’ll take United States of America for example, they celebrate their independence day on July 4, and despite Hawaii becoming the last state to join America, they still celebrate the day America was formed.

“Therefore, there is nothing wrong for us to celebrate National Day, which is Aug 31, even though Malaysia Day, which is Sept 16, is the real day we celebrate together as a nation,” he said at the Program Mengibar Bendera event at Tasik Danu, Serian on today’s (Aug 30).

Meanwhile, Serian District Council secretary Constantine Gerald David Jonas said a flag was a symbolism of leadership, respect, prestige and sovereignty of a country.

“It is also a huge symbol in which the people of the country show their love and pride for their country,” he said.

“No matter where we wave our flag, whether it is in our office, coffee shop, I believe that is our own way of showing our gratefulness for the freedom that we have enjoyed throughout the years.”
