KUCHING: The proposal to build a casino in the Borneo Highlands has the potential to drive the socio-economic growth and provide income opportunities for the local.

The Minister of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn said that a casino can indirectly stimulate various industries, particularly in the economic sector, leading to increased job opportunities and economic benefits for the community.

“When many tourists visit the area, it will boost the local economy as products such as agricultural produce will be in demand,” said Sagah after officiating at the 10th Triennial General Assembly (TGA) of the Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA) at the DBNA Multipurpose Hall yesterday.

He urged the public to consider the potential socio-economic benefits of such investments, rather than solely focusing on the gambling aspect. However, Sagah added that the decision on whether to proceed with the construction and operation of a casino in Sarawak ultimately rests with the state government.

Regarding the Serian Convention Centre project, Sagah refrained from providing further comments but announced the exciting news that its inauguration, which will be launched by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, is scheduled to take place on July 15.

The project, initially launched by the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem in 2016, had its groundbreaking ceremony by Abang Johari in 2017.

Transport Deputy Minister Datuk Henry Harry Jinep, DBNA President Datuk Ik Pahon Joyik, former Minister of Education, Science and Technological Research Datuk Amar Michael Manyin Jawong, and other prominent members were also present at the event.
