KUCHING: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) here is intensifying efforts to enforce seat belt regulations among drivers traversing the city’s roads.

A recently published video on the department’s official Facebook page highlighted the proactive measures taken by the JPJ Kuching Falcon unit, conducting patrols to identify motorists failing to buckle up.

Non-compliance of seat belt regulations is captured through the use of enforcement action cameras (EAC) where JPJ personnel would ride around the city to detect offences committed by motorists.

Following identification of offenders, notices of interview under Section 114(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 will be dispatched to the respective vehicle owners.

Under the provision, vehicle owners are required to appear at the JPJ Complaint and Investigation Management Unit within one month from the issuance of the notice for further investigation.

In the video clip, it showed a JPJ officer signalling to drivers that their non-compliance of seat belt regulations has been recorded by the enforcement camera and that a formal notice will be sent to their registered address.
