KUCHING: Absence makes the heart grow fonder — but with the advances in technologies available today, Gawai can be celebrated together via online platforms.

Sarawak Teachers’ Union (STU) president Macky Joseph noted that Malaysia including Sarawak is still battling against the Covid-19 pandemic but he believed such situation will not become an obstacle for people to communicate.

“STU believes Covid-19 does not prevent us (general public) from communicating with family members and friends to express joy in ushering in Gawai.

“Communication can be done via various media platforms which include social networking, microblogging, photo sharing, video sharing and etc,” he said in a statement today in conjunction with Gawai Dayak on June 1.

He also acknowledged that teachers have been reminding pupils to stay safe while staying at home and for those celebrating Gawai, he advised them to be self-obedient and self-disciplined to break the chain of Covid-19 infection.

“STU wishes a healthy yet safe Gawai Dayak celebration with the new normal scenario. Ngajih ka kita gayu guru, gerai nyamai, lantang senang nguan menua,” he added.
