KUCHING: The Nyamai Sarawak Gastronomy 2023 programme represented a sensory exploration and a blend of traditional and innovative culinary arts, reflecting the rich gastronomic culture of Sarawak.

The event, attended by the Sarawak Gastronomy Association’s patron Datuk Sri Nancy Shukri, highlighted the importance of exploring Borneo’s unique gastronomic heritage.

“From Julau’s creamy white pepper farmers to Betong’s puffer fisherman, Bario’s salt producers, and apple harvesters, these are the hidden gems yet to be recognised by the global culinary community,” she said in her speech during the event at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) recently.

The event honoured various local culinary talents and establishments. Lepau restaurant received the Sarawak Culinary Excellence Award, Aunty Mei Laksa@Choon Hui was recognised as the Sarawak Heritage Hawker Stall of Distinction, Lee Fah Mee won the Exportation Excellence Award, and Grab Malaysia was presented with the Sarawak People’s Choice Award.

The Sarawak Gastronomy Association remains dedicated to preserving and promoting the state’s diverse culinary heritage. Through thorough documentation, research, and collaboration with local communities, the association safeguards traditional recipes and authentic Sarawakian cooking methods, ensuring the preservation of the region’s cultural identity.
