KUCHING: The 10-day Gawai Dayak Bazaar 2022 here serves as a platform for the Dayak community to promote their micro-businesses and an opportunity to make some income.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said money-making opportunities at the bazaar was good as it was among the objectives for hosting the event to enable the Dayaks to sell their products.
“Other than that, it is also our way to expose their micro-business skills,” he said after officiating the Gawai Dayak Bazaar at MBKS Community Hall yesterday.
He hoped the bazaar would attract tourists to introduce the authentic Sarawak cuisines.
During his walkabout, he was pleased with the well-organised stall arrangements and the overwhelming public response.
The organiser has targeted to set up 200 stalls offering food, beverages as well as handicraft and art products, however, as of Monday, only 129 stalls have been set up.
Uggah hoped more stalls would be set up next year.
The Gawai Dayak Bazaar from June 17 to 26, runs from 4pm-11pm on weekdays and from 10am-11pm on weekends.
Various activities will be held throughout the event and among them are the Dayak-Orang Ulu, Iban and Bidayuh Art Night programmes; live band performances; Kumang and Keling competitions for those aged nine to 15 years; Gawai Idol event; and performances by local artists.
Also present were Minister in the Premier’s Department Datuk John Sikie Tayai, Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department Datuk Gerawat Gala, Deputy Minister for Utilities and Telecommunication Datuk Liwan Lagang and MBKS mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng.
