MIRI: This year, locals and foreigners can expect to see some changes and improvement to the toll collection booths at Sungai Tujoh, Kuala Baram.

According to Dr Gary Tan, the toll collection booths executive manager of Woodville, a subsidiary company of Shin Yang Group, this was part of their initiatives to beautify the booths.

“We welcome Sarawak Minister for Transport, Datuk Sri Lee Kim Shin’s suggestion to make the collection booths more beautiful and vibrant.

“We are keen to do some upgrading works such as replacing the existing signage with LED or repainting the collection booths,” he said on Tuesday (Feb 21). “We are hoping to embark on the work within this year.”

On another note, a separate lane meant for villagers and staff of Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) at Sungai 7 at the toll collection would be opened to help ease traffic congestion.

“I was told that the surrounding villagers and staff of ICQS at Sungai Tujoh, are facing difficulties whenever they pass through the toll booths because of the long queue,” Lee said.

He added that the situation would become worse during peak hours in the weekends.

“Most of the villagers from the surrounding area (of Sungai 7 toll booths) have no choice but to endure the long queue with the rest of the foreign travellers in order to get home.”

The villages are Kampung Masjid, Kampung Mempelam, Rumah Bangau, a school and an oil palm estate, with a total population of 400 people.

“A separate lane needed to be created for these villagers to commute daily without having to endure the long queue for hours before making it home,” Lee said.
