BINTULU: Chinese voters in Jepak may be a small number but their votes are still as important as everyone else.

Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) president Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said the people should take this by-election as an important one and never take it for granted.

“Even though there are only 1,400 Chinese voters in Jepak, your votes are very important.

“This Saturday (Nov 4), all must come out to vote for Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) candidate Iskandar Turkee. Don’t ‘tengok saja’.

“I hope the Chinese voters, and other voters will vote GPS and ensure a better majority,” he said when asked to comment on the GPS Manifesto for Jepak by-election today (Oct 29).

The Deputy Premier said that as a component party in GPS, SUPP is at full force to support the Jepak by-election.

“This by-election is a show that a vote for Iskandar, is a vote for GPS. One vote is also to remember and support the late Datuk Talib Zulpilip,” he said.

Dr Sim said that in order for the Sarawak government to continue their success, they need a strong mandate from the people at the mid-way point of this term.

The upcoming Jepak by-election will be a three-cornered fight between GPS’ Iskandar, Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) candidate Stevenson Joseph Sumbang, and Parti Aspirasi Rakyat Sarawak (ASPIRASI) candidate Chieng Lea Ping.

The Jepak state seat became vacant following the demise of Datuk Talib Zulpilip on Sept 15 due to kidney complications.

The late Talib had served the Jepak constituency for six terms since 1996.

The Election Commission has scheduled the polling day for Nov 4.
