KUCHING: The Democratic Action Party (DAP), to date is the best protector of the nation’s wealth and public funds, claims State DAP chief Chong Chieng Jen.

He said this is the view held by the people as the party retains its integrity and principles — despite it being scapegoated by other political parties who betrayed the people’s mandate.

“With DAP as a partner in government, many of those with corrupt intent to abuse their government positions for personal gains did not get their way.

“In the 21 months of Pakatan Harapan (PH) government, the Finance Ministry (MOF) practised very strict compliance to the standard operating procedure (SOP) on government procurements and awarding of government contracts.

“All ministries and even state governments and their agencies have to comply with the MOF circulars on their procurements and contracts,” he said in a yesterday.

Chong said that the MOF under the stewardship of then Finance Minister and current DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, insisted on open tenders as the SOP for most government procurement process.

“That is why, as the Finance Minister, Lim Guan Eng was not popular even among some of his colleagues in the cabinet. But we owe it to the people to ensure that their tax-payer money is not squandered and plundered,” he said.

Yesterday, Chong also welcomed 100 new members from residents of Batu Lintang, comprising mostly the Indian community, applying to form the DAP Stapok branch.

“Notwithstanding the huge disappointment on the fall of the PH government, DAP will not lose hope and will continue to fight on for the betterment of the country and Sarawak.

“To the new members, my advice is that to be a member of DAP is an obligation to the country and the rakyat.  We must continue the struggle with integrity and discipline,” he said.
