KUCHING: The influx of Indonesians seeking medical care in Sarawak’s private hospitals does not mean that healthcare in Indonesia is poor, says Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

The Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts said on the contrary, they are here due to the close proximity and the affordability factor.

“We interpret Indonesians travelling to this country for medical care as medical tourism.

“We hope that this issue is not viewed as a big issue. Let those who can and should travel obtain the necessary medication.”

He said this when met by the media after completing the flag-off of the motorcycling expedition in conjunction with Teacher’s Day celebration at Sarawak Education Office parking lot here today.

He continued by saying that some Malaysians also travel abroad for medical care and this was a common thing.

“It is beneficial for the private hospitals involved. Additionally, it has an impact on the hotel, and food and beverages sectors.

“We therefore hope (Indonesian president) Jokowi is aware of this. It in no way implies that the standard of healthcare in that country is lower than that of other countries.”

Jokowi previously expressed sadness and disappointment over the fact that some Indonesians are eager to receive medical care abroad.
