KUCHING: It is imperative to avoid engaging in illegal dumping practices and collaborate with the Health Ministry and Kuching South City Council (MBKS) to effectively combat dengue outbreaks.

Emphasising the significance of public awareness, MBKS mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng urges those who reside in areas under his jurisdiction to uphold hygiene standards consistently.

“The bad habit of illegal dumping practices is still occurring in the city, and this is one of the main culprits that promotes mosquito breeding places, which will lead to a dengue outbreak.

“This irresponsible act and habit needs to stop if we want a healthy, clean, and safe environment for our children and future generations to enjoy,” he said.

Wee said the continuation of illicit dumping practices and poor housekeeping within the city are the primary causes behind the proliferation of mosquito breeding grounds, resulting in dengue outbreaks.

“With regards to dengue cases in Kuching South for 2023, generally, it is still very much under control.

“This is largely due to MBKS’s continuous effort to keep Kuching clean and also the close cooperation with the Ministry of Health,” he said while officiating the Dengue Campaign at Kampung Lumba Kuda Mosque here today (July 2).

During his speech, he highlighted that the Dengue Campaign is a vital government initiative aimed at curbing the spread of mosquito-borne diseases by identifying and eliminating potential breeding sites for mosquitoes.

Wee also reminded the public of the importance of maintaining a clean and healthy living environment.

“Keep your compound clean and do not grow too many plants and leave them unattended, for it’s a good hiding place for mosquitoes, and do not practise illegal dumping, be it outside your premises or on vacant land,” he said.

He also appealed to the public to actively cooperate with the Ministry of Health and MBKS in their efforts to overcome the dengue outbreak.

Among those present at the campaign were MBKS Deputy Mayor Hilmy Othman, MBKS council secretary Zainab Marzali, and Kampung Lumba Kuda community leader, Ismail Samsudin Puteh.
