KUCHING: Sarawakians working abroad should reconsider new career opportunities in the state.

Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian said young professionals who are working and living outside Sarawak, made their choice (of working abroad) in the past due to the absence of career opportunities locally.

Previously, they may not have had the opportunity but with recent developments, there may be new career opportunities for them.

“Sarawak needs all the expertise to reach a developed state status by 2030 and to top the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) ranking.

“Apart from spending quality time with your families during the Chinese New Year (CNY) celebrations this year, please learn about what is happening in Sarawak and the new career opportunities available.

“We want everybody and all Sarawakians to contribute to our home,” he told reporters after lighting up the Padungan White Cat statue last night (Jan 18).

The Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government said Sarawak is an inclusive state which promises opportunities for all, regardless of race or creed,  or whether they are living in rural or urban areas.

Dr Sim said it is well reflected in the  civil service as well as the recent appointment of Sarawak Federation of Chinese Associations president Datuk Richard Wee Liang Chiat as a trustee of the Yayasan Sarawak board.

On the CNY open house, a combined open house will be hosted by Dr Sim and Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang, Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap and Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng.

It will be held on the second day of the celebration on Jan 23 at the MBKS Dewan Masyarakat in Padungan from 10am to 3pm.

“This open house will be rotated among the four of us each year and everyone is welcome, regardless of race and religion,” he said.

Meanwhile, MBKS mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the dressing up and lighting of the cat statue for CNY, is something that the locals have been looking forward to.

“Before the end of Christmas, people were already asking us when the cat statue would be dressed for CNY.

“Hence, we would like to appeal to the public to not vandalise this iconic cat statue as it represents the people and essence of Sarawak,” he said.
