DEBAK: The community is being called upon to take action and prevent social issues affecting youth from escalating further.

Deputy Minister of Women, Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Development II, Razi Sitam, emphasised the importance of youth remaining cautious and not succumbing to negative influences. Whether it’s peer pressure or the sway of social media, youth need to be wary.

He highlighted a particularly alarming statistic: in 2022, Debak reported 12 teenage pregnancies which is the highest figure for the Betong division.

“This is a very worrying development and needs to be curbed immediately.

“In addition, let us not forget the rise in other social issues such as smoking, substance abuse, and illegal racing, which we’ve seen these issues grow yearly.

“Youth are vital to society and country, it is hoped that through this programme to boost awareness and guide them towards healthier decisions, benefiting them both physically and mentally,” he said at the launching of ‘Remaja Bijak, Remaja Sihat’ programme held recently.

The Saribas assemblyman also stressed the need for character-building among youth. He said education will equip them to resist negative temptations and avoid entanglement in societal challenges.

“While academic excellence is vital in shaping accomplished young individuals for our nation, it’s not enough on its own. Our country’s progress relies on youth who are both intellectually accomplished and physically and mentally resilient,” he added.
