KOTA SAMARAHAN: Football and sports generally are a great way to ensure policemen are dynamic, responsible and successful, said Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata.

Mancha said in sports, good values such as the spirit of sportsmanship and fighting spirit can be instilled within individuals and policemen alike.

“In sports there is a concept of ‘fair play’ therefore this creates good understanding amongst players, instils preparations in strategy and urges discipline in the players,” he said in his address at the closing ceremony for the 2024 Sarawak PJP Football Tournament Cup at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) Stadium, here on Saturday.

He also mentioned that the players in the tournament would be scouted to represent the Sarawak Contingent at the ‘Piala Ketua Polis Negara 2024’ held in Johor on March 3, this year.

“I believe hosting this football tournament has achieved its objective and is to not only to select players to represent the Sarawak Contingent at its highest level but also produce dynamic, responsible and successful policemen.

“This is evident in this evening’s game, 30 teams contested in six groups representing their stations across Sarawak after a thrilling encounter since Jan 29,” he said.

Mancha stayed on to witness the final between Pulapol Kuching and IPD Miri, to which Pulapol Kuching was victorious after a 4-1 win over IPD Miri.

Also present at the tournament’s closing ceremony was Deputy Police Commissioner Datuk Ibrahim Darus.
