KUCHING: The construction industry will play a crucial role in driving the economy of Sibu in the next 10 years with the redevelopment of Bukit Assek beginning next year.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the first phase of the redevelopment plan will focus on infrastructure, thus, it is expected there will be a lot of business and job opportunities in the construction industry.
“The redevelopment plan is a game changer and set to transform the landscape of Sibu into a modern and environmentally-friendly town.
“Once it is completed, Sibu will be able to attract investments in tourism and travel-related services as well as medical and healthcare services,” he said.
The Premier added that Sibu needed to move away from the timber industry as the Sarawak government is focusing on forest conservation, reducing carbon emissions to tackle climate change; and no longer encouraging the cutting down of trees or forests.
He said the public and private sectors should work together ‘in adjusting’ Sibu to focus on commercial development plans and projects.
“We will inject the development fund (for infrastructure) while the private sector will have to do work on projects for commercial, housing, among others,” he added.
Abang Johari was speaking at a press conference after visiting Sibu Flood Mitigation Project (Phase 3) at Batang Rajang and the site of the redevelopment of Kampung Datu yesterday (Aug 7).
Earlier, Abang Johari chaired the State Development Coordination Committee Meeting (SDCCM) – the fourth meeting for this year after previous meetings in Kapit, Miri and Lawas.
According to a press statement, there are a total of 153 projects approved for Sibu Division with a total ceiling of RM746.5 million.
As of July 31, a total of 62 projects (40.5 per cent) have been completed; 36 projects (23.5 per cent) are under various stages of implementation and 39 projects (25.5 per cent) are in the planning stage.
