KUCHING: Moving forward, it is hoped that relevant authorities will work together with the public regarding the importance of fire safety.

“In order for that to happen, we need to ensure that every household should have one portable fire extinguisher and fire fighting equipment in every business premises are well maintained and in good service condition,” said Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap Yau Sin.

He said this in his statement after visiting the aftermath of the fire incident at Mile 7 on Wednesday.

Yap, alongside officers from Social Welfare Department (JKM) visited the scene to coordinate on the type of assistance that can be given to the fire victims.

“I have also contacted Fire and Rescue Department (BOMBA) Sarawak director Datuk Khiruddin Rahman, requesting the forensic report on the cause of the fire can be completed as soon as possible to allow the affected shop owners to take back control of their premises for cleaning and restoration purposes and make their insurance claim.

“I had also agreed to pay the expenses for RELA to guard the premises affected by the fire,” he added.

He also asked the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) to provide free of charge two roro bins to be delivered on the site.

“More roro bins will be delivered if the two current roro bins are inadequate and I have contacted Housing Development Corporation to find out whether there is any temporary accommodation available for a family affected by the fire, who is currently putting up with friends,” he added.

He hoped in the future, the public would retain their composure and refrain from making reactive statements on social media which is not beneficial to anyone, especially if there is a fire of the nature occurring in their neighbourhood.
