Cops after arsonists who hurled Molotov cocktail in Batu Kawa residential area

PADAWAN: Police are on the hunt for two suspects who allegedly committed arson by throwing a Molotov cocktail at a car parked in front of a house at Taman Banquet Square, Batu Kawa here yesterday.

Padawan police chief Supt Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said his men are working to identify the suspects investigate the reson for the incident.

In the incident around 3.20am, a 53-year-old complainant woke up to a loud explosion outside his house. He rushed out to find the rear of his car on fire and proceeded to extinguish the fire before firefighters arrived.

“The complainant checked his security camera footage and discovered that a car, a Naza Citra, driving past his house twice before the incident.

“During the second sighting, a man wearing a cap and face mask, got out of the front passenger seat and lit a wick from a bottle before hurling it at the vehicle,” he said, adding that losses were estimated losses at RM4,000.

The first suspect was described to be about 160-170 cm tall and wearing a black mask, black cap and dark clothes whereas the driver could not be described.

Abang Zainal said the complainant and his family have denied that they are in debt or have enemies.

The Bomba Zone 1 Forensics team led by Hafizul Abdul Kadir informed the police that the cause of the fire was a Molotov cocktail.

The case is being investigated under Section 435 of the Penal Code for mischief by fire, which carries a maximum 14 years in jail and a fine, upon conviction.
