530 new cases, three deaths in Sarawak

KUCHING: Sarawak yesterday (May 24) recorded 530 new Covid-19 positive cases and three deaths, said the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC).

It said the cumulative total number of cases now stood at 42,813 with a death toll of 255.

SDMC said 397 or 74.91 percent of the total cases were detected in Sibu, Miri, Bintulu, Kuching and Julau districts.

“Of the total, 142 cases were detected in Sibu, Miri (72), Bintulu (70), Kuching (68), Julau (45), Sri Aman (14), Tanjung Manis (13), Kanowit (13), Selangau (12), Kapit (nine), Betong (nine), Pusa (seven), Bukit Mabong (six), Sarikei (six), Mukah (six), Song (four), Meradong (four), Subis (four) Kabong (four), Daro (four), Belaga (three), Tatau (three), two each in Pakan, Serian, Sebauh and one each in Asajaya, Samarahan, Limbang, Beluru, Saratok and Lubok Antu.  

“Of the 530 new cases reported, 90 people showed signs and experienced symptoms of Covid-19 infection during screening,” the committee said in its daily Covid-19 update yesterday (Monday).

The committee said the first death involved an 82-year-old local woman who was treated at the Kapit Hospital for shortness of breath.

“The case had difficulty breathing and experienced fatigue in performing daily activities over the past week. She tested positive for Covid-19 on May 14 and died on May 23. The woman had a history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and high blood pressure,” it said.

SDMC added that the second death case involved a 67-year-old local woman who was treated at a private health clinic for cough, fever and headache.

“Her swab test on April 30 was positive for Covid-19. The woman was sent to the Miri Hospital for further treatment and was pronounced dead on May 23. The case had no history of comorbidity.”

Meanwhile, SDMC said the third death case was a 67-year-old local man who was treated at the Miri Hospital for respiratory distress.

“He had symptoms of fever, cough and chest pain since five days ago. He tested positive for Covid-19 on May 15 and was pronounced dead on May 23. The man had high blood pressure, dyslipidaemia and heart disease.
