KUCHING: Ramped up enforcement efforts in this year’s ‘Op Selamat’ coinciding with Hari Raya Aidilfitri have resulted in the significant increase in summonses issued for various traffic offences compared to last year.

Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata said a total of 8,804 summonses were issued throughout the six-day operation from Apr 8 to 13.

This showed an increase of 7,316 summonses, representing an astounding 491.7 per cent rise from last year’s ‘Op Selamat’ figure of 1,488 summonses.

“The surge in the issuance of summonses for ‘Op Selamat’ this year is due to the implementation of ‘total enforcement’ and targeted actions against offenses prone to causing accidents.

“Nevertheless, our commitment to ensure smooth traffic flow and provide service to road users was still carried out throughout the ‘Op Selamat’ period,” he said in a statement.

Overall, the Sarawak Contingent Police Headquarters (IPK) has devised a comprehensive strategy that includes ‘Op Lancar and Omnipresence, Show of Force, Enforcement by Objective’, as well as advocating virtues to ensure that traffic flow dispersion response is being carried out aside from monitoring hotspots where fatal accidents often occur.

In light of this, Mancha urged all road users to always adhere to the traffic regulations and heed instructions from enforcement officers, especially during festive periods.

In addition, he appealed to the community to prioritise safety for themselves and their loved ones while on the road.
