KUCHING: The number of Ramadan bazaars here has increased and the Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) has implemented initiatives to reduce solid waste at these bazaars, said Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi.

The Deputy Minister of Utility and Telecommunication said among the issues that DBKU has noticed is the amount of food served for sale, which can lead to unsold food waste.

“To combat this issue, we advise food providers to arrange their items properly and dispose of any unsold or expired food in a proper and orderly manner, and make sure that the waste is disposed of in an appropriate place, so that DBKU can collect and dispose of it properly.

“It is also recommended that vendors prepare a sufficient amount of food according to the rules of one night of sales to avoid waste.

“DBKU also reminds consumers to buy right amount of food and avoid wastage, as Islam does not encourage waste,” he told reporters after attending the contribution ceremony organised by the Sarawak Islamic Council for mosques, suraus, and Islamic cemeteries at the Sarawak Islamic Complex Hall on March 29.

Consumers are also urged to dispose of their waste properly in the correct place, so that the local council can collect them.

With these initiatives in place, DBKU hopes to reduce the amount of solid waste at Ramadan bazaars in Kuching this year, Junaidi said.

Also present during the ceremony were president of Sarawak Islamic Council (MIS) Datuk Misnu Taha and director of the Sarawak Islamic Department (Jais) Khalidi Ibrahim.
