SIBU: A couple suffered burns after a workers’ quarters they were residing in near Sibu Airport was razed to the ground yesterday (Oct 20).

In the incident, a 36-year-old foreign man suffered burns on his back while, his 40-year-old Malaysian wife suffered burns on her legs.

Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Zone 4 chief Andy Alie said a team from the Sibu Jaya fire station was promptly dispatched to the scene after receiving a distress call around 5.08 pm.

“Upon arrival, the fire was still raging at the workers’ quarters at an oil palm plantation.

“The quarters was beyond saving and the extinguishing deed was performed,” he said in a statement today (Oct 21).

It only took five minutes for the team to control the fire.

Andy added that the injured couple had already been taken to the hospital by an ambulance before the team’s arrival.

Once the situation was deemed safe, the teams wrapped up the operation at around 6:05 pm.

“The cause of the fire and losses incurred are still under investigation,” he said.
