SIBU: Celebrating love in a heartwarming ceremony, Dr. Adele Damat and Hii Hieng Phoi have become the first couple to exchange vows on the auspicious date of May 20, also known as 520, at the Foochow Association here.

Dr. Adele, a 32-year-old devoted medical professional at Kapit Hospital, is the beloved eldest daughter of Reverend Steward Damat and Reverend Lau Lee Lam. Her groom, Hii, 39, is a talented project engineer.

The couple’s union was facilitated through a fortunate family connection, and their love blossomed over an enchanting eight-month courtship.

The date of May 20 holds great significance for the Chinese community as it is associated with the modern Chinese Valentine’s Day.

In Mandarin, the numbers 5.2.0 are pronounced as ‘Wu Er Ling,’ which bears a close resemblance to the phrase ‘Wo Ai Ni’ (I Love You).

Under the guidance of Lau Pick Die, an assistant marriage registrar at the Foochow Association, a total of nine couples embarked on their marital journeys on this momentous day.
