MIRI: Starting a mini crawfish farm on the third floor of a commercial building may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but that was what two friends have done.

Crawfish farm owners, Elvis Hii and Willy Sim, started the ‘Aqua Tech Z Sarawak’ at the Airport Commercial Centre, Airport Road about a year ago.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas recently paid a visit to the farm with Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau, and both were impressed with what they saw.

“I am impressed with the entrepreneurial spirit of our young people now, and quite a number of them are venturing into unconventional areas in the agricultural sector.

“They know what they are doing, and they go for training and are always keeping themselves informed of any development and technologies in their businesses,” he said during the visit.

Uggah, who is also the Minister of Agriculture Modernisation, Native Land and Regional Development, said that being landless was not a problem as they opted to use shoplots.

“It is an irony. We have people with land but are keeping themselves busy fighting over ownership or to claim even bigger land, and they fail to use such land and thus get little returns.

“But these landless youths, they are earning good monthly income,” he continued.

According to Elvis, they had good demand for the crawfish fries which they sold locally, and stated that they sourced the parent materials from rivers in the division.

Also present during the visit was Assistant Minister of Local Government and Housing, Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil.
