MIRI: Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) will be the official venue host and sponsor for Spartan Sarawak 2023 on May 6.

Sarawak Deputy Minister for Tourism, Performing Arts and Creative Industry, Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew said the event had been so successful that it had established a reputation for being one of the toughest races in Southeast Asia.

“It is hoped that long-term, it will also become one of the premier tourism events for Sarawak like the Rainforest World Music Festival and other music, cultural and sporting events we have become renowned for.

“It will definitely be one of the highlights of this year’s Visit Sarawak Year 2023 campaign,” said Ting after witnessing the agreement signing between event organiser Kuching Fitness Association and Curtin Malaysia here on Thursday (Feb 9).

“The campus here is ideal for a Spartan Race, being so vast with terrain suited for different types of obstacles, and excellent campus facilities for athletes and spectators alike.

“Furthermore, I am well aware that Curtin Malaysia management is very supportive of sports development in Sarawak, not just as a Sarawak government-owned entity but also due to its extensive expertise in sports science, sports engineering and other related disciplines,” said Ting.

He also encouraged the sporting community in Miri as well as its wider populace to lend their full support to the event.

The Spartan Race is known for being a running race with the additional challenge of obstacles along the course, requiring a complete fitness level (cardiovascular fitness + strength + mobility).

In addition to the Super race, a 10km race with 25 obstacles, there will be The Sprint, which is the favourite among Spartan athletes with a 5km course and 20 obstacles.

There will even be a Spartan Kids Race with distances of 800m, 1.6km and 3.2km for children aged five to 14.
