KUCHING: Do not let the job of eradicating dengue fall under the city councils or the state government as it is everyone’s job, said Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng.

He was speaking at the dengue awareness programme at Song Kheng Hai Hawker Centre in Padungan yesterday.

Wee suggested that the community associations and non-governmental organisations work closely with MBKS to keep the environment clean and healthy.

He proposed the associations and organisations organise various activities such as “Adopt-A-Street” project to get the public to participate in the cleanliness campaign.

“Together, we can take preventive measures to help reduce mosquito problems,” said Wee.

The mayor added the public should check potential mosquito breeding grounds in their premises like water storage tanks and get rid of the stagnant water, cover water containers properly and clear any choked drains.

“I hope this awareness programme will make the public more aware of the importance of environmental cleanliness for so that we may continue to enjoy good health,” he said.

Wee explained that MBKS’ Vector Control staff were carrying out systematic surveys and inspections at mosquito breeding grounds as well as potential breeding places, for example, building/vacant sites, hillsides, back lanes, rooftops and refuse collection points.

“Once a breeding place is located, the officer will immediately eliminate it by spraying or fogging the area, or applying larvicidal oil, or removing of stagnant water to weed out the larvae.

“Summonses will also be served on those who allow mosquitoes to breed on their premises.”
