KUCHING: The Department of Veterinary Services (DVSS) targets to vaccinate at least 40,000 dogs in the state next year.

DVSS director Dr Adrian Susin Ambud said the large-scale vaccination programme will be carried out in the future to curb the spread of rabies in Sarawak.

“We will hold more mass vaccinations for free and will implement the programme near the border together with the Immune Belt Enforcement Team (IBET) from the Sarawak Security and Enforcement Unit (UKPS),” he was quoted as saying by a local newspaper here.

On a serious note, he also reminded pet owners to ensure that they take their pets for the anti-rabies vaccine annually.

“Owners need to vaccinate their dogs against rabies every year in accordance with the Anti-Rabies Vaccination Order.

“Failure to do so is an offence under Section 40 of the Veterinary Public Health Ordinance, 1999 and liable to be penalised with a fine not exceeding RM2,500,” he said.

Dr Adrian also called on owners to license their dogs and ensure their pets do not mix with any animals whose vaccination status is unknown and be aware of the dogs that are infected with rabies.
