KUCHING: Commercial crime cases in the state are on the rise as the people are in need of money to survive in this current situation, said Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri.

In a press conference today, he disclosed that the perpetrators would resort to various modus operandi to get at their victims, most of whom are easily lured by their ruses.

“That is why we have repeatedly reminded the public that we have provided a portal and call centre to get further clarification and information from the police.

“Aside from that, the Bukit Aman CCID also has a ‘Semak Mule’ portal (https://semakmule.rmp.gov.my/), which can be used to check on bank accounts.

“Therefore, I want to advise the public not to get involved in any dubious offer or messages or information. You do not entertain the call or message because if we answer them, we will be hooked on to contact the next phone numbers related to it (dubious offer or message),” he said.

The Sarawak Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) has recorded a total of 666 cases from Jan 1 to Mar 31 this year.

Azman pointed out that this showed a 26-case or 27.45 per cent increase compared to the previous year’s figure of 640 cases in the same period.

He said among the scam cases recorded this year are investment scams involving 50 cases and RM2.6 million losses; disguise scams (85 cases and RM1.8 million losses); Macau scams (48 cases and RM1.7 million losses); job offer scams (58 cases and RM786,000 losses); and non-existent loan scams (63 cases and RM419,000 losses).

Also present at the press conference were Sarawak Deputy Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata, Sarawak CCID chief Supt Maria Rasid and her deputy DSP Jimpun Dian.
