KUCHING: The Ministry of Education (MoE) will give priority to the issues of dilapidated schools in Sarawak.

Its Minister Fadhlina Sidek said this was among the education matters concerned that were discussed with Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“First of all, it is definitely about education issues in Sarawak which MoE will work hard on, and it is especially in welcoming the spirit of Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) which talks about giving access to education to all.

“This, we must prioritise including the development of the dilapidated schools in Sarawak,” Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS) quoted her as saying in a report.

Earlier, she paid a courtesy call on the Premier at his office, Wisma Bapa Malaysia today (Jan 27).

Fadhlina also said among other matters discussed was Sarawak’s experiences related to initiatives on strengthening unity in the country.

“For this, I think it is also very important for us to continue to make a joint commitment on unity-related matters including at the national level,” she said.

She added that the ministry will also run educational programmes together with the Sarawak government which will provide many benefits to all.

On a related matter, the Sarawak Premier’s Cup Debate Competition will be re-organised after its organisation was previously postponed following the spread of the COVID-19.

Fadhlina said the goal of the debate competition was to strengthen the use of the Malay language among students in the state.

“We have agreed to hold the debate competition in Sarawak again as one of the big events.

“And this is one of the programmes that has the full support of the Premier,” she said.

Meanwhile, this is Fadhlina’s first courtesy visit to the Premier after she was appointed as the new Minister of Education on Dec 3, 2022.
