KUALA LUMPUR: A commotion broke out at the lobby of Dewan Rakyat when a group of students were prevented from delivering a memorandum on Universities and University Colleges Act (UUCA) 1971 to Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik by Parliament security officers.

The commotion began when about 10 students from the Coalition for Academic Freedom (Gabungan Pembebasan Akademik) tried to hold a media conference at the lobby but was barred by security officers.

Calmness returned when Maria Chin Abdullah (PH-Petaling Jaya), Rusnah Aluai (PH-Tangga Batu) and Hassan Karim (PH-Pasir Gudang) came to listen to their grouses and agreed to deliver the message to Maszlee.

A representative from the student group, Sharan Raj of Universiti Tenaga Nasional (Uniten) said even though they were happy with the amendment of UUCA by the government, they insisted the government abolished completely Section 15 and 16 of the act. – Bernama
