SERIAN: The Department of Environment (DoE) Sarawak believes that the state government’s initiative of using hydrogen fuel can reduce carbon emissions from motor vehicles.

Its director Hamzah Mohamad pointed out that the initiative suggested by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg was a positive one.

“We believe an environmentally friendly fuel can help to reduce  emissions from motor vehicles.

“Because of that, the department will  give its fullest support to the initiative,” he told a press conference at the Serian Road Transport Department (JPJ) Weight Station, Jalan Kuching-Serian today.

Hamzah said the department would also ensure that vehicles on the road were in good condition and did not cause air pollution.

He added that when vehicles used hydrogen fuel, the compliance level towards the Environmental Quality Regulations 1996 would be high.

“Hopefully, the use of hydrogen fuel can be expanded and extended to the whole of Sarawak,” he said.
