BAU: People from surrounding villages of Mount Tabai have been urged to not involve in the illegal gold mining activities.

Kampung Bijuray Mongag chief (KK) Ripay Sikan, 52, noted that many people frequent the area to mine gold which seems to be the easy way out.

“This mining activity has also become a source of income for some.

“However, we must take this tragedy as a reminder that this place pose dangers which may lead to fatal incidents,” he told reporters when met at the site yesterday.

He was referring to the fatal tragedy involving a 25-year-old man trapped under a big rock when hunting for gold at Mount Tabai on Tuesday.

Although the area was identified as restricted, Ripay said the place was not monitored which made it easier for the people to trespass.

He further hoped that the locals would stop mining gold in the area and would find other ways to earn an income.
