Driver dies in crash between Betong and Sarikei

SARATOK: A welder died and another suffered minor injuries after the vehicle they were in crashed at KM30, Jalan Betong-Sarikei.

Sarawak Traffic Police chief Supt Alexson Naga Chabu, who confirmed the case, said the four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle crashed around 3pm last Friday (Sept 24).

The driver identified as Mohd Fitri Mohd Nizam Semail, 24, and his three co-workers were going to Sarikei from Betong.

“It was learned that the vehicle was speeding and is believed to have gone out of control before it skidded to the right side, rolled over several times and crashed near a ditch.

“The driver suffered severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics,” he told.

One of the back-seat passengers aged 23 injured the right leg and left eye. The other two passengers aged 24 and 47 were fortunate and escaped without injuries.

Alexson noted that the deceased was taken to Saratok Hospital.

The case is still being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
