Early morning oil spills cause accidents, congestion

KUCHING: Oil spills at Jalan Satok and Jalan Kuching-Serian early this morning reportedly resulted in numerous accidents and traffic congestion.

Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) assistant director of operations Henderi Ardimansyah said they were alerted to the oil spills at 12.57 am and at 1.01am.

Firefighters from Padungan and Siburan stations were dispatched to the scenes to tackle the situation.

“The team found that the spill at Jalan Kuching-Serian, measured about 40 metres long in front of Premier Food Republic and it resulted in several accidents.

“Meanwhile, at Jalan Satok, the oil spill stretched from Satok flyover to Satok bridge, covering a distance of about 2km.

“Firefighters used sand to clear the spill at Jalan Kuching-Serian, and sawdust at Jalan Satok to ensure road safety,” he said.

Despite the clean-up efforts at Jalan Kuching-Serian, it is believed that the incident caused motorists to be stuck in traffic congestion.

At around 9 am, contractors from Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) conducted thorough flushing works to further clear the oil spill at Jalan Satok till the Satok bridge.
