MIRI: Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) recently shared its vision for 2024, sparking enthusiasm for the future of education in the region among school counsellors from all 16 secondary schools here during a meeting held at its campus.
Curtin Malaysia, the largest global campus and Asean hub of Curtin University, is owned by the Sarawak government through Yayasan Sarawak. It is managed and operated under a joint venture with Curtin University, a globally recognised institution ranking among the top one per cent of universities worldwide.
During the meeting, several exciting developments were highlighted, including the opening of the Yayasan Sarawak English Enhancement Programme (EEP) to new cohorts in 2024, starting with Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) 2023 leavers.
The EEP, provided free-of-charge at Curtin Malaysia since early last year, aims to enhance English proficiency among local students, preparing them for tertiary education and empowering them with language skills for a highly globalised world. Registration for the first intake in April is now open.
To support local students preparing for SPM 2024, Curtin Malaysia announced the opening of its library to Form 5 students living in the Senadin area during February and March.
This initiative provides a modern and conducive space for exam preparation and underscores Curtin Malaysia’s commitment to nurturing local talent.
The Yayasan Sarawak BP40 Bursary Scheme, an initiative by the Sarawak government, continues to make tertiary education, including at Curtin Malaysia, more accessible to Sarawak Bumiputera students in the B40 and M40 family income brackets.
The scheme covers up to 80 per cent of tuition fees, with the remaining 20 per cent covered under Yayasan Sarawak’s Convertible Education Loan Scholarship, ensuring financial considerations do not hinder educational aspirations.
In celebration of its 25th Anniversary, Curtin Malaysia introduced the Curtin Malaysia Corporate Discount, offering a 25 per cent tuition fee discount to local school staff and their children, demonstrating the university’s commitment to giving back to the education community.
Curtin Malaysia urged school counsellors to support the Inspired By University (IBU) Programme, encouraging secondary school students to aspire to tertiary education through on-campus activities, fairs, talks, workshops, and competitions.
The programme emphasises that higher education is accessible to all and tailored to meet community needs.
The meeting, more than a discussion of plans and programs, was a heartfelt promise from Curtin Malaysia to the people of Miri, especially the youth.
As the university embarks on these initiatives, it stands as a beacon of change and a driver of the future of education in Miri, embracing a visionary and inclusive approach for 2024.
