Eight men held over assault

MIRI: Eight local men, including a teenager, were detained by the police last Sunday night (Nov 21) for allegedly assaulting and threatening a man and his family during a quarrel that occurred at a unit of Qudruplex Permyjaya here.

All of them were detained at Lorong 8, Taman Qudruplex Permyjaya around 10.45pm. Also seized were a machete and two wooden sticks.

It was reported that the suspects together with two others who are still at large, armed with machetes and wooden sticks, had created a scene outside the victim’s unit around 7.30pm that day..  

During the quarrel, one of the suspects reportedly swung a machete at the victim but fortunately, he managed to avoid the attack.

Preliminary checks revealed that the suspects had threatened the victim who allegedly saw them steal a car battery belonging to a next door neighbour.

Miri police chief ACP Hakemal Hawari confirmed the arrests. All the suspects, aged 17, 20 , 21, 23, 26, 28 and 46,  are currently being detained at the Miri Central Police Station (CPS).
