KUCHING: The public has been advised to avoid eight roads which will be closed for the coming Niti Daun (Gawai Dayak) parade, which will start at the Tun Jugah building and end at the Kuching Waterfront on Saturday (June 17).

Eight routes will be closed during rehearsal tomorrow (June 16) and on the day of the parade.

The roads are Sri Aman roundabout to the entrances of Jalan Padungan and Jalan Abell; Jalan Abell traffic light to Jalan Petanak; Jalan Padungan to Jalan Bukit Mata; Jalan Wawasan to Lebuh Wayang; Jalan Carpenter; Jalan Old Courthouse to Jalan Khoo Hun Yeang; and Jalan Gambit to Jalan Power.

Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri said the roads will be closed for rehearsal from 4 pm to 5 pm tomorrow.

“On the day of the parade on Saturday, the roads will be closed from 10 am to 5 pm.

“Members of the public who wish to see the parade are advised to park their vehicles at Saujana building, Plaza Merdeka, Reservoir Park, Medan Pelita building, around Tun Jugah building and Top Spot,” he told a press conference at the Sarawak Contingent police headquarters (IPK) media centre this morning.

He advise those attending the event to adhere to the authorities’ instructions to take care of personal safety and belongings.

Members of the public do not have to worry as the police will be present to ensure their safety throughout the event.

Mohd Azman said there will also be a Gawai bazaar at the MBKS Community Hall grounds from June 16 to 25.

A total of 170 stalls for food and beverage as well as other products will be open to the public alongside various activities.

The Niti Daun and related events are part of the celebration in conjunction with Sarawak’s 60 years of independence.
