MIRI: A woman in her 60’s here fell victim to a love scam and was duped of RM31,400 by her ‘lover’.

Miri Police OCPD ACP Alexson Naga Chabu confirmed receiving a police report lodged by the victim on March 3.

According to the report, the victim had never met the suspect and they only communicated via WhatApps and Line apps.

She became acquainted with the suspect via Facebook.

According to Alexson, the victim claimed that the suspect was coming here to see her, bringing her some cash and luxury gifts.

“Unfortunately, the suspect claimed that he was detained by customs personnel who spotted some foreign currencies. To ensure his release, the suspect told the victim some payment needed to be made,” he said.

The victim made the payment as instructed by her ‘lover’.

She realised she had been duped when the suspect could no longer be contacted and subsequently filed a police report.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code.
